Not just a straight fantasy, certainly, one built from pieces of many British myths and legends, and with an incorporation of British history too, all told in a way that uses themes and atmospheres from horror as well as fantasy. Beautiful writing. Come on Audible, more Holdstock please.

Excellent book, great narration

This was enjoyable, mainly because Rupert Degas elevates anything he narrates. One can sense that the themes and arcs in this story have been bettered and more refined by more recent authors in other similar styled novels. That said it is still enjoyable and at 10 hours long it trucks along at a nice pace.

A Classic from the 80's

A reasonable fantasy. It drew on so many different legends and myths that at time it felt a little bit directionless.....and I'm still not sure I "get" the whole basis for the mythagos.
Not completely disappointed I used a credit on it, but I very much doubt I'd ever listen to it again. (whereas I revisit Sanderson / Rothfuss/ Abercrombie books happily)

This was the book that showed me fantasy could be good. Forgot about the later books, this is the first and the best.

Narration was good, the narrator sounded like Richard Burton at times, listened at x1.5 playback speed.

Acclaimed mythopoetic fantasy novel that reads as if Alan Garner had written a blend of Mircea Eliade and Solaris. The first half of the novel in particular draws from older folk traditions, and is possessed of an eerie weirdness most evocative of Garner (as opposed to, say, the satisfyingly pretty and very modern qualities of kindred spirit, Neil Gaiman). The book resolves into a more straight-ahead hero-quest that left me slightly disappointed. Still, it is the journey not the destination that matters here. Plus, Rupert Degas' narration is beautifully judged, making this very easy on the ear.

This audio book does it full justice. Read it and recommend it. Would be good to have more from the series.
