About this listen

An indispensable guide to the craft of writing and business of publishing from one of our best-selling and most versatile authors.

Onetime teacher and best-selling novelist Joanne Harris has been advising and corresponding with aspirational writers for more than six years. This collection of pithy and funny lists of advice provides both hard-won wisdom and insider industry help. All aspects of the writing process and story development are covered - as is the thorny issue of how and where to find readers. From workspaces and habits to plot and dialogue, these are motivating, problem-solving lists from an experienced and widely respected writer.

Uniquely, Ten Things About Writing also takes the listener beyond the stage of finished manuscripts and editorial changes - into the territories of rights, publicity and marketing. Whether you have the urge to write crime fiction or a fantasy novel, literary short stories or blockbuster thrillers, Joanne's lists will speak to you.

If you are serious about writing or just a dabbler this is for you. Thank you Joanne for putting this out there. So much about the process of writing, about agents and the publishing world I have not heard before. It gives you encouragement and reminds you to enjoy what you are doing at the same time! A valuble listen for any writer.

I listened to this because I was curious and love Joanne Harris's books. But now I really want to write and feel I have a 'realistic'. overview of what it entails. Thankyou, it did bring joy. The joy of a new possiblity.

I very much enjoyed this. Entertaining and informative, Joanne Harris reveals and lays bare all aspects of becoming an author. After listening to this I bought a hard copy of this book as I feel it will be a good reference book in my days ahead. Highly recommended.

Essential reading for aspiring writers

The advice is sound, but the delivery via audiobook didn’t work for me: it’s read fast and the author reads out the advice via a list of numbered points. It just doesn’t work. There’s no time to digest what she’s said before the next one is rattled out. I recommend reading this one the traditional way!
