About this listen

Kinch Na Shannack owes the Takers Guild a small fortune for his education as a thief, which includes (but is not limited to) lock-picking, knife-fighting, wall-scaling, fall-breaking, lie-weaving, trap-making, plus a few small magics. His debt has driven him to lie in wait by the old forest road, planning to rob the next traveler that crosses his path.

But today, Kinch Na Shannack has picked the wrong mark.

Galva is a knight, a survivor of the brutal goblin wars, and handmaiden of the goddess of death. She is searching for her queen, missing since a distant northern city fell to giants.

Unsuccessful in his robbery and lucky to escape with his life, Kinch now finds his fate entangled with Galva's. Common enemies and uncommon dangers force thief and knight on an epic journey where goblins hunger for human flesh, krakens hunt in dark waters, and honor is a luxury few can afford.

A very classy reading of an absorbing and beautifully written tale. Old Magick, the nasty kind, politic-ing, also the nasty kind, and grimy fantasy fill this story of a thief who falls in with the right wrong crowd.

Fantasy worth the time and coin

I really enjoyed the story and the characters. I listen to a lot of fantasy and this is one of my favourites this year. I thought the author read it superbly. It allowed him to deliver the book as he intended. Give it a listen, you won't be disappointed.

I've always loved a thief type in my fantasy and this is a great example. Kinch is a great character. I wasn't put off by the comical accent, it suited the vibe. One of my faves of this year.

Bloody brilliant

Story was great but as a non native English speaker understanding reader's accent felt like work.

Hard to listen

The author keeps things simple with a linear narrative told from a first person perspective - and just concentrates on telling a rollicking good story, which he duly delivers. Not massively ground breaking - but there are some nice ideas and wry humour which combine to make this an entertaining and amusing read. I'll be looking out for the sequel.

Exactly what I hoped it would be

One of the best fantasy novels I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Action packed, full of intrigue and incredibly funny with a perfectly voiced charismatic lead character supported by a host of weird and wonderful supporting figures. I’ve recommended this to almost everyone I know who has a love for the genre.

Fantastic story perfectly performed

I really enjoyed this, so much so that I bought the prequel book immediately and will look out for the sequel to buy as soon as it is released too.

It was narrated excellently by the author, which I felt really helped in telling the story he wrote as he wanted. The main protagonist, POV character, was witty, sarcastic and immediately likeable.
As with all fantasy books there was some world building needed but this did it minimally and IMHO naturally. I knew enough to understand the story, there was a larger world out there but didn't need that information now.

I'm hoping the sequel is released soon because I definitely want the story to continue

An enjoyable, fantasy story
