About this listen

The Emperor of Aria has been murdered, the Empire is in crisis, and Dead Men walk the streets...

But Myla, Fings, and Seth couldn't care less. They're too busy just trying to survive in the Sulk-struck city of Varr, committing petty violence and pettier crimes to earn their keep in the Unrulys, a motley gang led by Blackhand.

When the Unrulys are commissioned to steal a mysterious item to order, by an equally mysterious patron, the trio are thrust right into the bitter heart of a struggle for the Crown, where every faction is after what they have.

Forced to lie low in a city on lockdown, they will have to work together if they want to save their skins...and maybe just save the Empire as well.

First review; Can't wait to listen to more! Great storylines, wit, sarcasm and fantastic narrator to bring it to further life. Great combination and teamwork!

Fantastic

Stephen Deas is a very good story-teller, and I think this is my new favourite of his books. He is very well-served by the brilliant reader, Chris Harper, who brings the dialogue between characters to life, handles the internal voices well, and generally seems to be enjoying reading it.

Great story, well told

Really enjoyable listen

This book got a great review in a genre magazine I respect. However, it didn't live up to expectations. Characters are poorly developed, there was no sense of the geography of the settings, and it ends on a whimper.

It proceeded at its own steady pace, but never built up to anything satisfactory. So many fantasy novels are set in a faux-medieval world like this, so you really need to stand out...this book didn't.

If you are a fan of Joe Abercrombie or early Scott Lunch, don't bother with this book.

Average world-building and characterization
