About this listen

Longlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction 2020

The New York Times best seller.

Meet the Sorenson Family.

Marilyn has somehow fallen into motherhood and spent four decades married to

David, who's pretty certain he loves her more than anyone has ever loved another person.

Wendy, their eldest, a cause for concern, soothes herself with drink after being widowed young,

while Violet, lawyer-turned-stay-at-home-mother, is disturbed by the reappearance of a son placed for adoption 15 years earlier.

Liza, a professor, is pregnant with a baby she's not sure she wants by a man she's not sure she loves

and Grace, their dawdling youngest daughter, lives a lie that no one in her family suspects.

I loved every sentence of this book! The characters are so well drawn and realistic. The narrator, Laurel Lefkow, is wonderful at bringing the characters to life with her clever voice changes and accents. Thank you Claire Lombardo for writing such an expansive, interesting, beautiful story.

A wonderful look at an American family with a captivating narrative that allows multiple points of views, giving all characters full depth and range. Loved how the intricacies of complex family dynamics evolves, slowly reveals, and a realistic, clever take on sibling rivalry (that you may not even see coming). Loved the voice narration, overall, enough to listen to in long journey in car with husband's first listen, and my second. Was able to pinpoint some parts of the story again and ponder the whole. Great writing. A real talent.

Listened to this twice and loved it

I chose this randomly as I fancied something a bit different, and was hooked from the start. I loved getting to know each character and the emotional rollercoaster of their stories. It’s a gentle listen to get lost in, not a fast paced action thriller. Some laugh out loud moments and some deeply sad moments, it was a joy to listen to.

Outstanding Read

I love how this was written! Lombardo manages paint a picture of the complexities of family relationships, romantic love and being a woman so effortlessly! She seems to move from past and present day without it being clunky in any way, and as we build a picture up of the past we really start to root for characters that we initially really didn’t like! At least that was my experience. I grew to love each one of the characters as the book progressed, for their individual journeys and very unexpectedly loved Wendy the most.

Brilliant! Amazing character arc and portrayal of intergenerational emotions

A great story of a couple and their four daughters told over a generation, with some great one-liners from Wendy!
