About this listen

Freya is still searching. For four years, she's been looking for a way to fill the empty space her brother's death left behind. Ready for another distraction, Freya decides to swim every tidal pool in Britain in a year with her friend Miri. The adventure takes them from a pool hidden in the cliffs of fishing-village Polperro to the quarry lagoon of Abereiddi via Trinkie Wick where locals meet each year to give the pool wall a fresh lick of paint.

As Freya travels further from London, she finds herself closer to memories of her brother. With every swim, and every stranger they meet in the water, the challenge becomes more than just a way to explore the coast, but a journey of self-discovery.

The Tidal Year is a true story about the healing power of wild swimming and the space it creates for reflection, rewilding, and hope. An exploration of grief in the modern age, it's also a tale of loss, love, female rage and sisterhood.

Freya, I’m so glad you narrated your own story. Hearing the sadness directly from you felt incredibly affecting and personal. I welled up every time and laughed with your joys. Thank you for sharing your journey. Looking forward to the next book. X

A beautiful book that kept me company. Freya writes about her experience of grief so eloquently and honestly, it’s also funny, playful, hopeful and so much more.
There are lines from this that had me in tears and will stay with me for a long time.
Also beautifully read by the author herself.

Incredible, honest, dreamy, resonant

This is one of the most beautifully written books I have listened to for a long time. Freya’s prose is pure, honest, heartfelt and heartbreaking all at the same time. The moments when her voice breaks as she is reading about her brother made my heart tighten for her. Thank you, Freya, for sharing your memoir. For sharing with us the love you have for your brother Tom.

Beautiful

A beautiful and brutally honest account of a family’s loss as told by Freya. Freya, is quite clearly an emerging talent in the literary world and whilst this must have been so incredibly hard for her to write - she has captured this, her own story, with such an open vulnerability and without pretence. I am in utter awe.
With a voice made for radio, hearing Freya read this gave even further resonance to an already frank and open memoir - just beautiful.

Took me on a grief journey with equal amounts of friendship, love and natural beauty too. Highly recommended (although I wish Freya would’ve told us who the girl was with Gem on the beach!)

Freya’s words and her delivery drew me in. I was intrigued and moved and grateful for her honesty in how she navigates loss and what she had and is learning. I enjoyed the rhythm of her writing and her descriptions and look forward to reading more.
