About this listen

Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry was 31. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

Clare and Henry's story unfolds from both points of view, depicting the effects of time travel on their marriage and their passionate love for each other. They attempt to live normal lives, pursuing familiar goals: steady jobs, good friends, children of their own. All of this is threatened by something they can neither prevent nor control, making their story intensely moving and entirely unforgettable.

"Highly original first novel....Niffenegger has written a soaring love story illuminated by dozens of finely observed details and scenes....It is a fair tribute to her skill and sensibility to say that the book leaves a reader with the impression of life's riches and strangeness rather than of easy thrills." Would you listen to The Time Traveler's Wife again? Why?

Definitely, because I know I missed loads of stuff. It is so intricately written, with threads weaving through the past, present and future.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Time Traveler's Wife?

Don't want to spoil it by giving anything away!

What does Fred Berman and Phoebe Strole bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The narrators are superb, and add loads to the story. The only complaint I have is with the sections in French and German, which I really couldn't understand, probably due to the very strong American accent, and I've taken off a star for that.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Both. In the abstract it seems unbelievable, but it works superbly.

Any additional comments?

Gorgeous, satisfying read. Loved it.

Immaculately crafted tale

What did you like most about The Time Traveler's Wife?

Both narrators worked together extremely well, the story is so well crafted and there really aren't enough ways to say that this really is an amazing audiobook.

Get it. You will not regret it.

Excellent and perfect. An exceptional audiobook.

I've read the book, some years ago, and thought the concept was fascinating, and also a very beautiful and strange love story. Ever since then, I've been recommending it to everyone!
I've seen the movie, and as usual, was very disappointed (our imagination is always greater than that of the people making the film!).
I've downloaded this audiobook immediately as I saw it as a daily book deal, literally jumping from joy, but was a bit apprehensive to start listening to it, afraid of being let down, and having my myth destroyed. So, after some time, I couldn't wait anymore. I've listened to all of it in 3 days and it was wonderful! Both performances are great, and it was a very good pleasure to be reacquainted to Henry and Claire. I'm missing them already, especially Henry,!

one of my favourite stories

On the whole very enjoyable- my one quibble is that where they had to speak German or French their accents were pretty awful. That made it hard to understand and also broke character since they were supposed to be fluent.

Wonderful book, very compelling and well read

Both the performance and the story are quite good. I guess the only thing that didn’t work for me that well is how she handles some of the secondary characters and how she feels the need of emphasising their race

Great performance

I read this book when I was a teen 15/16 and it made my heart and my teenage soul full. I devoured it in a matter of days and cried a great deal. There are images from this book that have remained with me till my mid/late 20’s, because they where so strong , full of life emotion and the beauty of human nature .
After now listening to it I am still as much in love as when I was a teen only I see it all from a different perspective and still I cried.
The best of Niffenegger.

I will always love this

I really enjoyed this novel and this is one occasion when I really feel the narration added to my enjoyment. The book was well read and the narrators had pleasant voices. I was vaguely aware of the story, of course, before I read the book, but the novel is so well written and the jumping between times is rarely confusing. The ending was interesting. I won't spoil it for anyone who is yet to read The Time Traveller's Wife but I couldn't decide whether I was happy with the ending or not. It's definitely sad but the reader is given closure. There is a gap in time when the reader is not told what happened and I feel like I would like to know what happened there. Or maybe it adds to the story that this time is not addressed? I'm not sure. I finished reading this last night and I imagine I'll be thinking about it most of the day.
Highly recommended.

IT WAS BEAUTIFUL.
I CRIED SO MUCH!
I found the voice actors to beautifully express the characters better than the actors of the film. I highly recommend to listen to it rather than watch it to grasp the full effect of it. It was adorable how they adapted to Alba's voice and overall just superb.

Well written and very well conceived. How does one build such an elaborate story? Loved this book. Wish there were more like it.

Exceptional story
